What happens to sons in the absence of fathers?

Fourteen-year-old Eli Yoder runs away from his Amish home after his mother's death to seek out his non-Amish father whom he has never seen. On his journey, he meets up with a teenage boy named Corey, a recovering drug addict who comes from a home with a psychotic mother and a father who ignores him.
